What Is Your Assignment?

Ephesians 2:10“For we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

1 Corinthians 7:17“Only let each person live the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him.”

This Christmas, I had the opportunity to spend time with my family and friends. Although we have shared many holidays together, this year was especially impactful for me. It was impactful because—for me and for many in my family—I witnessed the manifestation of our assignments.

At this point in my life, I am keenly aware that each and every one of us was placed on this earth to do something for God. We are God’s ambassadors. Whether we realize it or not. Whether we have discovered it—or ever discover it—we each have an assignment. Some call it purpose. Some call it manifestation. Some call it gifts.

Some people believe they are in this world simply to become rich, powerful, or successful. Others believe they have no purpose at all, so they wander through life aimlessly, without direction or hope. Still others sense that they have a purpose but are afraid to step into it.

I am here to tell you that only what we do for God truly matters.

Our assignment may seem small. It could be a five-minute interaction with someone that changes their entire life. It could be a smile, a word spoken, or even something that feels insurmountable—but it is an act prepared before the beginning of time. It could be a moment of shared love where we experience its true meaning. It may be short-term or long-term, but it is intentional.

I have discovered that my assignment is to encourage others and to give hope to those who feel unseen, unheard, and unvalued. God directs me to those He has chosen. It may be through a phone call, a conversation, or a smile. Recently, it has been through this blog—where God speaks to me, and in turn, I share that conversation with others.

I know this is my assignment because I carry that posture into every interaction. I can be in a crowded room, and God will draw my attention to one person. He shows me their spirit and directs me to speak to them, listen to them, or simply laugh with them. After the interaction, something shifts—in them and in me. I can feel it. It is powerful. It brings an unexplainable joy and a deep inner knowing.

You know when you are operating in your assignment because it flows out of you with ease. You can’t help yourself. It overflows from your soul, and you feel pulled toward it.

I witnessed this same thing this week in several members of my family. I have a friend who has been assigned the gift of prophetic word. No matter where she is or what is happening, when God speaks to her and commands her to operate in her gift—to deliver His word to one of His children—she is obedient. That obedience is honored by God.

I have seen the outcome of her obedience. I have watched her speak to strangers and witnessed truth being acknowledged through tears and shouts. I have seen the shock in their eyes, followed by a breakthrough in their spirit—knowing the word could have only come from God.

I witnessed that same breakthrough this weekend through my daughter as she embraced her gift and spoke into my sister’s life. I saw the impact of my daughter’s obedience to her assignment. My sister was in a place of pain and bondage, and because my friend and my daughter were obedient, it broke a yoke and stronghold in an area of her life that had been blocking her from moving to another level in her purpose in God. Their obedience created healing and breakthrough that will now allow my sister to complete the assignment God has for her.

There are times when the enemy will try to convince us that we are not worthy of our assignment. He whispers defeating thoughts into our minds. He tells us life is hopeless. He tells us people are not worth it. He tells us our purpose doesn’t matter. He attempts to hold us hostage through negative thoughts about ourselves—binding us to self-sabotage, convincing us we don’t deserve forgiveness, and making us believe we have no right to peace, happiness, or love.

These lies keep us tied up in self-defeat and focused only on our pain. They can sink us into depression and trap us in a tunnel that prevents us from seeing the pain of others. They prevent us from hearing God. They prevent us from operating in healing because all we can see is our own struggle. This distraction can hinder us from fulfilling the true assignment God has for us—and for those He has called us to serve.

Knowing and embracing our assignment is the key to life. We are in this world for only a short time. From the moment of our birth, time moves swiftly forward. Time is fleeting. It is vital that we discover, embrace, and walk in our assignment while we have the opportunity.

God has only our voices, our hands, our ears, and our feet to deliver His work. He depends on us to act on His behalf. The only qualifications are obedience and trust in Him.

So, I ask you—do you know your assignment?

If not, let’s begin this new year discovering it…and boldly operating in it.
