IT IS FINISHED!
This morning, God—just as He has so lovingly been doing for me—placed three powerful words in my spirit: “It is finished!”
Those words answered so many of the questions I had been asking Him:
Why do we as believers struggle to believe that we are truly free from our iniquities? Why do we continue to beat ourselves up over our mistakes, missteps, and what we call our “sin nature”?
Why do we doubt that God is who He says He is?
We say we’re sold out for God. We declare that we’re saved and that we’ve received salvation through our belief in Jesus Christ. We claim that we’re more than conquerors, that no weapon formed against us will prosper, that Satan has no power over us. We pray, worship, praise, sing, minister—yet minutes later, we’re judging ourselves or someone else.
We come to God begging for help, forgiveness, victory, strength, healing, answers. We wallow in despair, act like we can’t hear His voice, and keep asking for signs and wonders.
I’ve been just as guilty as anyone else. So, this morning, I asked God, “Why do we do that?”
His answer was plain, simple, and only three words: “It is finished.”
God reminded me that the work of redemption, salvation, and the fulfillment of Scripture was completely accomplished through the death of His Son. Humanity’s debt has been fully paid. The sacrificial system has ended. Satan’s dominion over believers has been broken forever.
This is what He impressed on my heart:
“Daughter, your guess is as good as Mine. I don’t understand why My children keep dragging My Son back to the cross because of their inability to believe I’ve already done what they’re still praying for Me to do. Why do they think that through worry, confusion, self-doubt, and fear, I would allow My Son to be crucified again?”
“It is finished” means the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross completely paid the penalty for
humanity’s past, present, and future. Everything you’ve done, will do, or will think about doing has already been atoned for.
God said I foreknew you. I knew every choice you would make—and still called you. I
predestined my child when they had the needle in their arm. I called the abuser as they were raising their arm to strike. I justified the fornicator while they were lying in bed. I wanted the liar before they opened their mouth. I justified the molester and the molestee. I purposed you when you were “as filthy as a pig’s pen.”
My children’s behavior has never been a surprise to me.
I KNOW YOU!”
Yet you spend your lives trying to repent for things I don’t even remember. You try to repay me through works that could never equal the death of His Son. You judge the speck in your brother’s eye as if I didn’t already know it was there. You battle the enemy like the victory has not already been won, when the real villain is your inability to believe “It is finished.”
God doesn’t need our help. He never did. What He needs is our belief in what He’s already done.
He needs us to operate in the authority He’s given us through the Holy Spirit. He needs us to show His love, kindness, and the fruit of the Spirit—to be His light in the world.
When He said, “It is finished,” He meant it. And even though His children struggle to live like we believe it, He continues to be gentle with us through His grace and love.
Then God concluded our conversation by saying, “Tell my children, don’t get it twisted, I have already done what I said I would do. I’m waiting for them to catch up.”
After that spiritual tongue-lashing from God, all I could say was, “Yes, Lord.”
